What is a walk and Roll to School Event?

Walk & Roll to School Day is a celebratory community event that encourages students and families to use active transportation—walking, biking, skating, scooting—to get to school safely and joyfully. Schools across the Central Coast host these events to promote safer streets, healthier kids, and more connected school communities.

Why host a walk and roll to school event at your school?

Healthier, Happier Students

Active transportation helps kids arrive at school energized and ready to learn. Daily movement supports physical and mental wellbeing—one of the core goals of Safe Routes to School programming.

Safer, Less Congested Streets

Walk & Roll events reduce car traffic around campus, improving air quality, lowering congestion, and creating safer school zones.

Stronger School Community

These events bring students, caregivers, and staff together for a shared experience. Many schools incorporate giveaways, classroom challenges, or breakfast incentives to boost participation and community spirit.

How to Host a Walk and Roll to School event

Step one: Planning

Start by confirming your event date and securing school support. Identify a meeting location, map routes, and gather the materials your school will need. Use our downloadable planning tools to outline tasks, assign roles, and prepare your timeline.

Step two: Recruiting

Invite teachers, parents, students, and community volunteers to help support the event and participate in the Walk & Roll celebration. Building a broad team ensures smooth logistics, strong turnout, and an engaging, community‑wide experience for everyone.

Step three: Communicating

Promote your event early and often using posters, flyers, newsletter inserts, text reminders, and social media. Share the Walk & Roll safety tips to help families prepare. Consistent messaging ensures families know how to participate and what to expect on event day.

Step four: Delivery

On event morning, set up your welcome table, track participation, hand out stickers, and celebrate your walkers and rollers. Encourage photos, positive energy, and safety reminders—this is what makes the day memorable!

Request Supporting materials

Need safety supplies, stickers, or digital assets? Submit a request through our form, and our team will follow up. To receive these materials, schools must agree to use sign in sheets for the event and distribute a brief participation survey to students on the day of the event.
