The Salinas Safe Routes to Schools Plan is a partnership between the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, City of Salinas, Monterey County Health Department, Ecology Action, and the Salinas City, Salinas Union, Alisal, and Santa Rita School Districts. The goal of the project is to improve safety for students biking and walking to 45 schools in Salinas.

Community input is the foundation of the planning process. The Plan will include infrastructure recommendations for each school such as new and/or improved crosswalks, as well as program recommendations such as bike and pedestrian safety education, crossing guards, and school carpooling. The draft list of recommendations will be shared with the school community in spring and fall of 2021, and the community will have the opportunity to give input on the project list. The final plan is expected to be completed in late 2022.

Temporary Installation

As part of the Salinas Safe Routes to Schools Plan, the bike lanes on McKinnon Street between Harden Parkway and Harden Middle School will be changed to separated bikeways and temporary curb extensions will be added on Westminster Drive. These changes will be in place for 30 days, with the goal of improving safety and getting feedback from the community.

  • Allows the community to test out the design
  • Provides protected space for students biking to school
  • More walking and biking supports a healthy community and environment

You are invited to walk and bike on McKinnon Street and Westminster Drive during the installation to see what a permanent project could look like and share your feedback.

Our goal is to improve safety by getting feedback from the community.

Temporary Improvements for McKinnon Street & Westminster Drive

Protected walking and biking installation coming to McKinnon Street and Westminster Drive.

  APRIL 20TH - MAY 18TH

  • Barriers will be used to separate the bicycle lanes from people driving. This design improves safety for people on bikes. In a permanent project, these would be plastic posts or planters.

  • On Westminster Drive, there will be painted space at the intersections to create temporary curb extensions. In a permanent project the curb extensions would be raised to sidewalk level. This design makes people walking more visible to drivers and shortens the crossing distance for people walking.

There may be additional traffic during the temporary installation.  Please allow extra time to drive through this area

There may be more people walking and biking on McKinnon Street and Westminster Drive during the temporary installation. When you are driving, please slow down and watch for people walking and biking. When you are walking and biking, please follow the rules of the road and make sure that drivers see you before crossing the street.
